The barefoot-chic Tides Lodge is set on the secluded, palm fringed Ushongo Beach on the mainland coast of Tanzania. Revel in a sense of peace and exclusivity, undiscovered by crowds.  At this relaxed, homely Lodge, guests experience a warm welcome from the team, many of whom herald from local communities.

The Tides Lodge is located on the magnificent Ushongo beach, which has been voted “One of the World’s best beaches” by The Sunday Times Travel Magazine. Designed as the ultimate destination for relaxation, guests can choose to unwind on their veranda or balcony, swim in the pool or stretch out on the pristine sands. The lodge itself is deliberately low key and relaxed, yet offering the best levels of service and cuisine.

Accommodation:

Beach Cottages – There are seven (all numbered in Swahili) individual cottages set among the palms that line the beach frontage.  Each has a veranda overlooking the sea and a private sunbathing area on the beach-front with cool kings-size sun loungers. The rooms themselves are bright and breezy with a huge billowing mosquito net and plenty of windows allowing good airflow and natural light. The en-suite bathrooms are spacious, with a large walk-in shower and hot water heated by solar power.

All beach cottages have the following facilities:

• King-size bed (covered by a mosquito net). This can be split into two single beds
• Large en-suite shower room with solar heated hot water
• Free standing fans
• Bath and beach towels
• Covered veranda
• Private king-size beach beds on beach in front of cottage

Upepo Suite – Set back in the lush gardens of the lodge this two storey house is very private. It is perfect for honeymooners or those who want a little extra privacy. The upstairs bedroom has a wooden decked floor extending onto a large balcony overlooking the Indian Ocean. Downstairs there is a lounge and bathroom.  The suite can also be used for families. Extra beds can be set up in the lounge.

Hibiscus House

Perfect for families, Hibiscus is beach fronted and has 2 large double bedrooms, a central living area and a dining table for private dining at the house. Outside there is a large veranda and private beach area with parasols. The house can accommodate up to 6 people.

Hibiscus House has the following facilities:

• 2 x King-size beds (covered by mosquito nets). These can be split into two single beds
• Large en-suite shower room with solar heated hot water
• Free standing fans
• Refrigerator
• Dining table for private dining
• Beach towels
• Veranda
• Private sunbathing area on beach in front of cottage

Embedodo House – This private house is set up the beach hidden in the Lodge’s garden, with 2 double bedrooms both en-suite, an inviting central living area, a kitchen and a large covered veranda.

Embedodo house has the following facilities:

• 2 x King-size beds (covered by mosquito nets). These can be split into two single beds
• Large en-suite shower room with solar heated hot water
• Free standing fans
• Beach towels
• Covered veranda

Food and Drink – Start the day with fresh tropical fruits from our generous buffet, enjoy freshly prepared light and healthy dishes from our all day lunch menu, and finish the day with a three course dinner in our open air restaurant overlooking the Indian Ocean.

We grow fresh herbs and salads in our own garden, and bake the most delicious bread daily in our wood fired oven.  Being on the ocean front, fish features prominently on our menu, and is brought to us by the local fishermen – thus supporting the local community.

Our Chefs and the kitchen team all come from the local villages, and have been trained to the very highest level in gastronomy and hospitality by some of the finest Swiss chalet staff.  They pride themselves on delivering a service that is attentive and unobtrusive, from a lazy lunch to a celebratory dinner.

At the heart of the Lodge and overlooking the Indian Ocean is the welcoming beach-front bar, hand-crafted from local materials.   Enjoy a fresh juice or to try an exotic cocktail as the sun sets for a magical and mystical evening under the stars, whilst a gentle breeze from the ocean keeps the temperature just around ‘perfect’.

Pool – An inviting swimming pool set back from the beach is sheltered from any sea-breeze, perfect to while away the day. Surrounded by palm trees the pool area is a real sanctuary
