Hotel Description
RAS KUTANI, SWAHILI COAST – A mere 25km south of the bustling metropolis of Dar es Salaam lies a slice of paradise. Ras Kutani rests between the deserted shores of the Indian Ocean and the quiet inlets of a freshwater lagoon, creating an idyllic barefoot hideaway.
The soul of Ras Kutani emanates from the never-ending stretches of creamy white sand, broken only by footprints and the lapping of the cool blue waves. This sought-after beach solitude is the foundation of pure relaxation and offers a stark contrast to East Africa’s busier resorts.
Ras Kutani supports, protects and enhances this rare ecosystem which boasts over 132 varieties of trees and is home to four species of monkey.
THE CAMP – Constructed from local, sustainable, natural materials the accommodation blends seamlessly into Ras Kutani’s exquisite environment, offering al fresco luxury living with a Swahili twist.
In the heart of the retreat lies the welcoming bar and open-air lounge, generously scattered with cushions creating the perfect ambience for evening cocktails.
CUISINE – The vivid history of the Tanzanian coast and its infamous spice trade has influenced the country’s cuisine, and the menu at Ras Kutani takes its inspiration from the coast itself; serving fresh, locally-caught, seafood with delicately spiced flavours accompanied by an appetising variety of fresh salads and scrumptious desserts.
Where else to enjoy such fare, but by the sea, with the water lapping, as you share wonderful, convivial barbeques under a star-lit sky?
COTTAGES – Our nine beach cottages have ocean views .Under the thatch, a spacious veranda unfurls with comfortable kikoi seating and hammocks.
The hardwood shutters lead through to the beautifully decorated interiors: the majestic double bed surrounded by a billowing mosquito net, and ensuite bathroom.
SUITES – Perched on the hillside & offering privacy, are four secluded suites, where the only company you have are the chattering monkeys.
The interiors are lusciously spacious with a Sultan double bed, let your eyes drift across the fluttering white curtains towards the azure seas and bruised sunrise sky.
HILL HOUSE – The perfect way to end a family holiday or weekend is a stay at our family house, situated above the main camp with blissful sea views.
The house comprises two spacious ensuite rooms, linked by an expansive terrace with built-in seating
Power in camp is 240 VAC powered by solar panels and generator. In each cottage or suite there is lighting, fan inside the mosquito net and two 24hour power wall sockets (British three-pin) – hairdryers can be used during generator hours.
In the camp there is mobile phone signal, including Tanzania’s main network suppliers (Airtel, Vodacom, Tigo) & wifi facility around the pool area,
ACTIVITIES – The main emphasis at Ras Kutani is pure relaxation; after an adventurous safari circuit, kick back and ease into the barefoot luxury of our beach retreat, but various activities are offered to complement our unique location.
RELAXATION – To completely unwind, either laze on the sunloungers by the cool waters of the swimming pool or let our beach attendants erect a beautiful sunshade on the beach, specially located for your privacy and that all-important afternoon nap.
SPA – For complete luxury let our on-site beauty therapist massage your cares away or treat yourself to a manicure ( booked and paid for on-site)
BEACH ACTIVITIES – Kayaks and boogie boards are available for guests seeking more physical exercise. Our calm fresh water lagoon is the perfect place to paddle and delve further into the riverine forest while families can have fun in the surf with the boards or even try their hand at beach volleyball or boules / petanque.
Use our complimentary snorkelling equipment to explore the shipwreck of The Chyko, a cargo vessel built in the 1900s, which lies just off shore. Although our coast is not a marine park, the waters do offer a snapshot of the beautiful Indian Ocean, with strikingly coloured fish and intricate corals.
