SAFARI TENTED CAMP ACCOMMODATION AND GUIDED GAME DRIVES – Quatermain’s Safari Camp accommodation is located on the Amakhala Game Reserve between Port Elizabeth and Grahamstown in the malaria free Eastern Cape of South Africa.
The camp is the culmination of two decades of passion and experience in the safari industry. Quatermain’s 1920’s Safari Camp is an intimate and rustic, 3 Star graded, expedition style tented camp with en-suite bathrooms. Game drives are conducted on the award winning Amakhala Game Reserve.
The ethos behind Quatermain’s is to offer guests the opportunity to experience the romance of those early safaris coupled with five star game viewing. Small and intimate, Quatermain’s Camp offers the very best that an African safari can; authentic tented accommodation, candlelit dinners, warm fireside company and exciting safari drives.
DAILY GAME DRIVES BY EXPERIENCED RANGERS – Amakhala Game Reserve is populated by a variety of wildlife including Elephant, Giraffe, Rhinos, Lions, Leopard, Cheetah, Buffalo, Wildebeest, Zebra and many other species. Our twice daily 3 to 4 hour Game drives which depart directly from camp, are guided by our experienced rangers.

LOCATION – Take the N2 from Port Elizabeth towards Grahamstown. Approximately halfway between the two or 68 kilometres from Port Elizabeth turn left at the Amakhala Carnavondale signposted entrance, enter the gate, proceed 1.5Km to Carnarvondale Lodge where you can leave your vehicle and you will be transported to the camp.
Our intimate 6 bed tented camp offers you the opportunity to experience “Africa under canvas”, with three crisp white 1900’s style safari tents fitted out with military campaign style furnishings; the choice of pioneers, hunters and explorers of that time.
COLONIAL STYLE TENTS – Relax in the centralised thatch boma area where local delicacies are prepared in front of you on an open fire, and dinner is served under a blanket of stars. Every effort has been made to stay true to the expedition style, with concessions only being allowed for rustic en suite bathrooms with modern conveniences. Our comfortable colonial style tents will ensure you enjoy a genuine bush experience.
As you unwind on your own private deck, you may be lucky enough to see an elusive Bushbuck or hear the cry of the African fish eagle. At night, as you lie under canvas, one of the highlights of your stay is sure to be drifting off to sleep to the sounds of nature; you can frequently expect to hear jackals calling, the beautiful voice of the fiery-necked nightjar, maybe a screeching barn owl, or if you are fortunate, the roar of lions.
Guests at Quatermain’s can enjoy the excitement of “Big 5” safaris on the award winning Amakhala Game Reserve, in a malaria free area. Our twice daily 3 to 4 hour Game drives which depart directly from camp, are guided by our experienced rangers. To have a well rounded Safari experience, we recommend that our guests try to stay for at least two nights.
WILDLIFE IN THE RESERVES – Enjoy the opportunity of seeing a myriad of species in one of the most diverse habitats in Southern Africa, the Reserve stands at the merging point of five of South Africa’s seven biomes.
Species that one could possibly see on the Amakhala during the safari trips are : Lion, Savannah Elephant, Square-lipped Rhino, Cape Buffalo, Cheetah, Southern Giraffe, Brown Hyena, Aardvark, Aardwolf, Porcupine, Bat-eared Fox, Caracal, Black Backed Jackel, Scrub Hare, 4 species of mongoose, Chacma Baboon and Vervet Monkey.
The reserves are also home to the following antelope species : Common Eland, Greater Kudu, Waterbuck, Red Hartebeest, Blesbok, Black Wildebeest, Bushbuck, Impala, Mountain Reedbuck, Springbok, Common Duiker, Cape Grysbok, Steenbok and Blue Duiker.
