Kariega Game Reserve is a family-owned, Big 5 private game reserve set in South Africa’s Eastern Cape. Perfectly positioned as a South African safari destination, it seamlessly complements a Cape Town stay, a journey along the scenic Garden Route, or travel from anywhere in the country.

Spanning 12,000 hectares of pristine African bush with two majestic rivers, the extraordinary beauty and biodiversity of the reserve offer exceptional game viewing and birding, including the Big 5 – all from open safari vehicles with expert guides.

Main Lodge offers families, friends and couples a relaxed and friendly environment to enjoy the African bush. All the log chalets are air conditioned, with en-suite bedrooms, and large private viewing decks. Each has a spacious lounge and living area which is great for socializing before retreating to the privacy and comfort of your bedroom.

The lodge has been expertly integrated with the surrounding bush to create a natural environment where guests can enjoy traditional meals in the restaurant or boma, a drink at the bar or a swim in the pool.

Main Lodge guests can enjoy the Blue Duiker Trail – a circular walk that takes between 45 minutes to an hour to complete. The trail follows the side of a ridge and includes an indigenous forest and open area with views onto the valley. There are environmental education signs at various points along the trail to provide information about the animals and birds that live in that area.

Main Lodge welcomes children of all ages and kids can enjoy our daily children’s programme, between approx. 11h00 and 14h00. These are mainly about having fun but we also aim to inspire, excite and educate.

Safari Lodge Chalets – 24 Log chalets, with large private viewing decks (some with private pools) offering privacy and stunning views of the Kariega river valley. All the log chalets are air conditioned (bedrooms only) with en-suite bedrooms.

Kariega’s Location & Directions – Situated on South Africa’s malaria-free Garden Route, Kariega Game Reserve spans across 12,000 hectares of pristine Eastern Cape wilderness and is home to the famous Big 5 as well as a multitude of African wildlife including hippo, giraffe and zebra. The reserve is also a paradise for birdlife, including resident and migrant birds.

The game reserve is located in the coastal belt of 1820 Settler Country, a natural extension to a visit to Cape Town and a trip along South Africa’s beautiful coast. The nearest airport is Port Elizabeth and is an 80 minute drive away, the seaside village of Kenton-on-Sea is 10 minutes drive and the historic town of Grahamstown can be reached in half an hour.

The safari park combines close up viewing of abundant African wildlife, excellent personal service and spectacular vistas across African plains and magnificent hills. The reserve incorporates two dramatic and picturesque river valleys – the Kariega and Bushmans.

A variety of safari activities are on offer to ensure you enjoy the spectacular wilderness. All-inclusive options include twice daily game viewing from open safari vehicles with qualified game rangers, river cruises, guided bush walks, canoeing, river fishing and beach trips by boat.
