Hotel Description
Easy to access in central Eswatini, Dombeya Game Reserve is a beautiful and peaceful retreat where you can stretch your legs and explore Africa at your own pace.
The chalets are stylish and comfortable- each with a wrap-around veranda and private pool- and guests are welcome to walk, take game drives, or just relax, with wildlife all around. With a cup of coffee in hand, visitors can stroll to a nearby wildlife watering hole, and watch a herd of zebra drinking- or enjoy giraffe ambling past your chalet, with a glass of wine at sunset. Dombeya Game Reserve is just 30 minutes from Eswatini’s KMIII International Airport and 4.5 hours from Johannesburg’s OR Tambo International Airport.
Guest Chalets: We have 2 luxury chalets in the Reserve, about 500 m apart; each is tucked in a beautiful spot, with a lovely view of the bushveld. Each chalet is self-catering, with 2 bedrooms and en-suite bathrooms, and can sleep up to 4 (and if needed, we can accommodate additional children on camping beds).
The chalets are extremely comfortable, with large open floor plans and verandas, and we provide basic tea, coffee, rusks and firewood/lighters. There are excellent grocery stores in Manzini, which is a 15 minute drive away. Each kitchen is well-equipped, and guests have a private braai/bbq on the veranda…. fabulous for cooking under the stars.
Dombeya is a stylish and relaxing get-away in the African bush- perfect for friends, couples or families.
Wildlife: There is lots of wildlife in the Reserve- giraffe, kudu, nyala, waterbuck, zebra, impala, warthog, bushpig, wildebeest, bushbuck, duiker, steenbok, caracal, jackal and lots more. Without the Big 5, Dombeya is a gorgeous place to explore on your own (no guides needed or provided). Our roads are all gravel and- while high clearance vehicles are helpful for spotting wildlife- they are not necessary. It is an amazing experience to be able to watch wildlife at your own pace.
Self Game Drives – Guests are welcome to explore the Reserve on our network of gravel game drive roads. We have a free app for your phone, which shows you exactly where you are, against all our roads and trails (the app does not need mobile data)!
Hiking and Walking Trails – We have over 10 kms of trails in the Reserve, which are excellent for walking. The trails weave in and out of the road network, so you can easily hop on and off, and enjoy a long or short walk. We also have several small picnic spots along the trails (with a picnic basket in each chalet!).
Swimming – Each chalet has a private swimming pool. Please note that there are no pool covers, fences or lifeguards, and children must be under adult supervision at all times.
Birding – Dombeya has recorded 233 species of birds (2022, and counting)! Keep your eyes opened for the gorgeous Pink-thoated twinspots, Grey waxbills and several species of migratory Cuckoos. Birdwatching is best at dawn and dusk.
In the Region – About a 40 minute drive from Dombeya, guests can visit lovely crafts shops, cafes and restaurants. In Malkerns, visit House on Fire- the eclectic venue for the famous Bushfire Music Festival every May, and enjoy a delicious meal at Malendela’s Farm Pub.
There are lots of upper-end crafts shops at the Gone Rural complex and at the Swazi Candles’ Hub, and we also have several roadside markets with small-scale stone and wood carvers, sewers and artisans. There’s lots to see and do in Eswatini, if you’re ready to explore outside of the Reserve!
Dombeya Game Reserve is a family-run business, and we live full-time in the Reserve if you need any assistance or travel advice. Eswatini is a lovely country to explore, and we look forward to your visit- please get in touch to check availability!
