OUR OWN HONEY, PROPOLIS & MAGICAL MARIOLAS

Wanderlust is home to our own two colonies of Mariola bees (Tetragonisca angustula), tiny native stingless bees treasured in Costa Rica and throughout the tropical Americas.

Mariolas have a beautiful place in Costa Rican culture and tradition. They are also affectionately known as Angelitas (“little angels”) and Virginitas, and an old Costa Rican folk tradition says that these gentle little bees are sent by the Virgin Mary to protect us with their precious honey.

For generations, native stingless bees have been lovingly kept for their honey and propolis, and today the tradition of caring for these bees — known as meliponiculture — continues throughout Costa Rica.

Mariolas are also important native pollinators, quietly moving among the flowers and tropical gardens and contributing to the ecosystem around them.

To us, their presence at Wanderlust carries a beautiful energy and symbolism: community, harmony, abundance, protection, connection, and transformation.

Thousands of tiny beings working together in extraordinary cooperation, moving between flower and hive, reminding us how deeply interconnected everything in nature truly is.

Here at Wanderlust, we lovingly care for our Mariola colonies and produce small amounts of our own Mariola honey and propolis, created from the tropical environment surrounding our sanctuary.

They may be some of the tiniest residents of Wanderlust, but they are certainly among the most magical.
