VISIT FIRE ISLAND – Ilha do Fogo (Island of Fire), a short boat ride from Pebane. is a nesting area for sea turtles and other marine species. Size: 44 hectares (110 acres) Distance from mainland: 25,7 km (17 miles) Distance to base in Pebane: 86 km

About the island: American-born philanthropist, Robert Koski, spent many years traveling through Africa and during these travels happened to hear about a deserted island up for sale. Ilha do Fogo, translating as “island of fire”, was bought and with it a dream to build a 5-star resort. Upon visiting the island he discovered that it was ravaged by poachers and that specifically leatherback and green turtles fell victim to these poachers. In a short time the dream of a resort was replaced by the need to protect these endangered species and it was decided to rather use the island as a conservation project.

Later Pebane Beach Lodge was acquired, which is the closest land base to the island, and from there the eco-tourism and conservation projects started. Recently Loggerhead Lodge and Mucombo Beach Camp (Villa Ukuthula) became further extensions of the Fire Island Conservation projects along with various community projects in Mozambique – all in aid of building awareness of endangered species and involving the local communities in the dream to live sustainably and in harmony with nature.
